About this service

What does water damage restoration include?

It includes removing the water, drying the structure and repairing what was damaged. Most jobs have three parts: extraction, drying with air movers and dehumidifiers, and rebuild work such as drywall and flooring. Mold work and contents cleaning are sometimes added.

Do I need a plumber or a restoration company?

Often both. A plumber fixes the pipe, fixture or drain that caused the leak, and a restoration crew removes the water and dries the house. Some companies do both. Ask on the first call which part they handle so nothing falls between them.

Is this site the restoration company?

No. Stockton Damage Restoration is a free referral service. When you call, you are connected with an independent local water damage pro who gives you a free quote. The provider may pay us for the referral. You decide whether to hire anyone.

Cost

How much does water damage restoration cost in Stockton?

Most jobs run $1,382 to $6,382, based on HomeAdvisor's and Angi's 2025 national data. Neither lists Stockton specifically. Sewage and outside flood water cost more per square foot. Small, clean-water leaks caught early cost the least. See our cost guide for ranges by class and room.

Is the quote free?

Yes, calling is free and the quote is free. Before anyone visits, ask whether there is any charge for the inspection and when you will get the written estimate. Some homeowners report paying an inspection fee and then waiting weeks for a quote.

How much can a contractor ask for up front?

No more than 10% of the price or $1,000, whichever is less. That is the California down payment limit for home improvement work, according to the Contractors State License Board. Ask for the full payment schedule in writing before work starts.

Insurance

Does homeowners insurance cover water damage in California?

Often it covers sudden water damage but not flood. The California Department of Insurance says homeowners policies don't cover flood damage but do cover other kinds of water damage. Gradual leaks and sewer backups depend on your policy wording, so read it or ask your agent.

How long does an insurer have to respond to my claim?

Insurers get 15 calendar days to acknowledge a claim and 40 days after proof of claim to accept or deny it. That is under California regulations. If the insurer needs more time, it must update you in writing every 30 days (10 CCR 2695.7).

Does flood insurance cover a sewer backup?

Only when a flood causes it. The federal flood program covers sewer backup caused by flooding, but not a backup caused by clogged pipes, according to FloodSmart. A clog-caused backup is a homeowners policy question.

Scheduling

How fast can someone come out?

It depends on the provider and the weather. After a big storm, many homes need help at once and schedules fill up. Call as early as you can, and stop the water and start moving things off wet floors while you wait.

How long does drying take?

Drying usually takes several days. HomeAdvisor says drying a water-damaged home takes around five days, depending on the damage. Repairs come after the readings show the materials are dry, and the full job can take weeks.

Can I stay in my home during the work?

Usually yes for small clean-water jobs. Sewage, large areas or mold removal may make parts of the house unsafe for a while. Ask the provider what they recommend, and ask your insurer whether your policy pays for temporary housing.

The job

What should I do before help arrives?

Shut off the water, turn off power to wet rooms from a dry spot and take photos. Move furniture and rugs off wet floors. If sewage is involved, stop using drains and keep people and pets away from the area.

Will they protect my belongings?

Good crews protect floors and furniture and list what they move. Ask for a photo inventory before anything is packed up or thrown out. You'll need that list for an insurance claim, and it helps if something is damaged during the work.

How do I know the house is really dry?

Ask for moisture readings. A good crew measures wet materials every day and moves equipment as areas dry. Ask for a copy of the readings or drying log before the walls are closed up.

Safety and rules

Who do I call about a sewer backup in Stockton?

Call the City's 24-hour line at (209) 937-8341 first. The City lists it for sewer backups and other water emergencies, including weekends. A crew can check whether the public main is blocked before you hire a plumber.

Does a restoration company need a license in California?

There is no separate restoration or mold license, but jobs of $1,000 or more in labor and materials need a licensed contractor. That threshold took effect January 1, 2025 (CSLB). Contracting without a license in a declared disaster area is a felony.

I rent. Who fixes water damage and mold?

Your landlord is responsible for working plumbing and for repairing visible mold or dampness, according to the California Attorney General. Tell the landlord in writing right away. Your own belongings are usually a renters insurance question.
